Subject: RE: Domain MessYou'll break all BROWSE ability because NETBIOS won't be able to resolve via WINS until the WINS server has rebuilt itself.
I understnad your reasoning for creating a new DB for WINS/DHCP. So if clients can deal with no ability to print, or view shares on servers until the WINS server has rebuilt itself, then you should be good to go.

Subject: Domain Mess
NT4 Domain-
I have been planning the removal of one of our BDC's that is our WINS, DHCP,
File and Print server. I've built up another BDC (without WINS and DHCP) and
am about to make the switch.
I've had numerous problems with WINS and DHCP on the old BDC among other
things, and I want to start fresh with the new one. Here's what I was planning to do.
Delete OLDBDC from Server Manager and shutdown OLDBDC.
Rename and change ip address of NEWBDC to OLDBDC.
Setup WINS, DHCP and Printer shares on NEWBDC(now named OLDBDC).I just don't know what the effect will be on the clients (all Win9x) because
the WINS and DHCP databases will be started from scratch. I hoped it
wouldn't be that big a deal since when the client's lease expires (4 day
lease), it'll just renew with the same address? Am I on the right track? I
am essentially dumping the WINS and DHCP database and hoping they'll
rebuilt.
Thanks
Scott

Title: RE: Domain Mess
Even
if clients are using H-node? Wouldn't they just resort to broadcasts? It's not a
large network and there is a secondary WINS server on another
subnet.
