Good idea, the file is left alone.
That's a good quick backup method also, the .DNS files for non AD
domains can be easily copied. This kind of a restore is fast, and
unobtrusive.

You can also just create a new zone, give it the exact same zone name...
and
viola... the zone is re-created...
also.. the .dns files are in \WINNT\system32\DNS
