Native mode AD domains can communicate with NT4 domains and you can setup
one-way and two-way trusts. However we installed the DCs in "pre-Windows 2000
permissions" because of the legacy clients and NT4 domains and servers. I can
admin my legacy NT4 domain logged in with a W2K account and vice-versa if I
want to.

For example our Excahnge servers are in the W2K domain but still use the
exchange service account form the old NT4 domain. We have changed the
apsswords a couple of time already too, no problems. We do not really want to
change the account since that is not trivial and since we are going to retire
the exchange envionemnt anyway well before the migration is complete.

I thought trust between 4.0 domains and 2000 mix domain were one way trusts
and non pass-through.

When you installed Active Directory did you specify NT compatibilit or
Mixed-Mode? In native mode AD cant communicate with NT. If you are not
sure check in AD Domains and Trusts snap-in under properties for your
domain.
