Download ie6setup.exe, run it, go to custom install and click on advanced:
 
Gives you 2 tickboxes: One for 'download now, install later' and the other is 'carry over file associations'.

Oh that's a nice way of saying things.  What "other" garbage apps are you suggesting in addition to IE 6, as I'm assuming by "other" you implicity include IE 6?

I've been running 6.x for a month and haven't had any problem. maybe it's your your setup and some other garbage apps you're running

I just installed over IE 5.5, no file associations carried over.  Go to joblo's movie trailers.  nothing plays.  :(  LOL

Well, a couple of us have installed IE 6.0 and we seem to be having
frame problems. Pages display ads, but not the text just like when we
print them sometimes. And on some, we get the text, but no sidebars. Any
ideas?
