That's what was odd to me Martin.  I did go to quicktime's site, and the image showed up (blue) as if to say it was installed correctly etc. but it still didn't work.  In fact, I still can't get mpegs and other windows multimedia video to display streaming with it.  I'm going to toy around with it some more today as I have a spare moment or two today.  I am sincerely grateful for the helpful input.

head over to quicktime.apple.com
They have a test to see if you need to update the version to work with IE 6.
I have 3 machines that I have it installed on and none have needed an update.
