Any chance you're using a quota product? If this is a roaming profile
location, what do the share level permissions look like? Did you turn off
the "bypass traverse checking" user right (if so, you need some rights on
higher level folders)?

The %SystemRoot%\profiles permissions are set to everyone = full control as
one of the MS Q articles said they should be. One of the servers had
everyone set to read and authenticated users set to full control; I fixed
that but it didn't fix the problem. Each profile directory under that
directory has:

        user = full control
        system = full control
        local administrators group = full control

The Q articles I read didn't say anything about permissions on the
subdirectories under profiles, but the above seems okay to me.

Michelle:

How are the permissions set on the two servers... specifically the
%SystemRoot%\profiles directory? I had problems before when the permissions
on that directory were a little **too** restricted; the server couldn't
create profiles for non-admin users.

No, I usually have better luck searching the TechNet CDs. But I suppose I
should give it a try.

NT 4.0, SP6a.

In the %SystemRoot%\Profiles directory on two of my servers, a TON of
directories called system.### and temp.### keep getting created. I assume
it has something to do with the event ID 1000's[1] that I am getting in the
event logs, but I have not been able to find any useful information on
TechNet to get rid of the problem. I have checked the things mentioned in
Q185198 & Q189119.

        [1] Source: Userenv; Description: Your profile was not successfully
loaded, but you have been logged on with the default system profile. Please
correct the problem and log off.
        Source: Userenv; Description: The operating system was unable to
create a temporary profile directory. Please contact your network
administrator.

Thanks, Michelle
