Benjamin,

I too think you are mistaken. Windows 2000 Pro does not support Mirroring = Raid-1. I've taken the 70-215 W2K PRO exam and although I am not an MCSE W2K yet I can tell you that neither Raid-1 nor Raid-5 can be used in W2K Pro. W2K Server can do it.

Definitions are given here:

And below is from Chapter 6 - Managing Disks of MCSE Training Book

Volume Types (Dynamic Disks)

You can convert basic disks to dynamic storage and then create Windows 2000 volumes. Consider which volume type best suits your needs for efficient use of disk space and performance.

  • A simple volume contains disk space from a single disk and is not fault tolerant.

  • A spanned volume includes disk space from multiple disks (up to 32). Windows 2000 writes data to a spanned volume on the first disk, completely filling the space, and continues in this manner through each disk that you include in the spanned volume. A spanned volume is not fault tolerant. If any disk in a spanned volume fails, the data in the entire volume is lost.

  • A striped volume combines areas of free space from multiple hard disks, up to 32, into one logical volume. In a striped volume, Windows 2000 optimizes performance by adding data to all disks at the same rate. If a disk in a striped volume fails, the data in the entire volume is lost.

NOTE
The Windows 2000 Server products provide fault tolerance on dynamic disks. Fault tolerance is the ability of a computer or operating system to respond to a catastrophic event without loss of data. The Windows 2000 Server products provide mirrored volumes and RAID-5 volumes that are fault tolerant. Windows 2000 Professional does not provide fault tolerance.

Creating multiple partitions or volumes on a single hard disk allows you to efficiently organize data for tasks such as backing up. For example, partition one-third of a hard disk for the operating system, one-third for applications, and one-third for data. Then, when you back up your data, you can back up the entire partition instead of just a specific folder.

I hope this was meant as some kind of joke. Being an MCSE and Support Specialist you should know that Winxp PRO does in fact have RAID-1 much like Win2k PRO has it, and WINNT4.0 has it..

Again Sean, it does support software raid1, I am using it on XP RC2 -2526 and XP 2565? or whatever their full version is

Good Luck

XP does not support it, but Windows 2002 Server (Advanced, Datacenter, etc.) will.

I'm somewhat familiar with the Pro's and Con's, but thanks for the info :o) I also know the procedure for disk mirroring, I just needed to know if XP supports it as W2k Pro does not.

Thanks again!

Warning: If you want disk mirroring (or any software RAID under W2K) you HAVE to use dynamic disks, and once they're dynamic there's NO going back.  Your familiar disk utilities may no longer work, and you have now forsaken partitions for volumes.  Good luck. ;)

Fire up Computer Management (from Administrative Tools, or right-click on My Computer and pick Manage), and click on Disk Management.  In turn, right click on the hard drives you want to mirror and select "Upgrade to Dynamic Disk...".  Once your disks are dynamic, right click on the simple volume you want to mirror, select "Add Mirror..." and follow the wizard.  Remember that you can only mirror simple volumes, not a spanned volume or similar.
