My day-job work laptop is dual-boot XP and Vista Business. I've been running the Vista side since 8/19/07 and have never had to boot back to XP. Vista default printer is server-based, tons of the usual admin apps loaded, etc. No issues. I know this doesn't help your situation, but...
Have to tried the restore feature? Maybe rolling it back to a previous day where you know it worked, having it work, export the registry, and then when it breaks export that and compare. Dunno. What hardware are you running Vista on? I'm on a Dell D600 laptop. At home I'm running Vista Business on a Dell E521 and a client is running Vista on Dell Optiplex's although they just had theirs rolled out two week ago, so they don't quite count yet in the reliability scoring... Hate to hear Vista is a pain in the arse for some. I remember SP2 for XP not being very fun for me to initially overcome, seems like same story, different day.
