Some of us don't have a choice because we chose to be consultants. I spend a lot of my own time keeping my skills and certs up. It has paid off very well for me. I have increased my annual pay about 300 percent in the last 5 years by increasing my skills, my certs and who I know. You can do the same if and when you want to.
