I bet HP's recommendation is due to the fact that the 2600n is
host-based only, ie no PS or PCL.  I find that the term "the software
sucks arse hard" when it comes to HP's host-based printers....

The next step up (the 2605n) is a proper PCL printer.

The next step up from there I would go with is the Color LaserJet 3000.
I would avoid the 3600 as it is YAHBP (Yet Another Host-Based Printer).

Slightly newer than that is the CP3505, which does native PCL and
emulated PS. It's slightly cheaper than the 3000 to boot.
