In this instance the server hardware is not the same. He may even have to
change HAL's.

I dunno - I'm with everyone else, don't image an existing server. I have
no problem using imaging to deploy a new OS install to bare hardware, but
using imaging to move a server - and a domain controller on top of that -
is just asking for problems. Why give yourself that much potential grief?
Does it really take that long to spin up a new box and promote it? If a
workstation flakes out, it affects one user. If a DC flakes out, how many
people could it affect?
