Thanks Jonathan. That first link was pretty much my first match on Google :)
I've been looking at some drive specs and I was a little surprised that even LTO5 drives seem to have a minimum data rate of "only" 40Mb/Sec. I'd assumed it would be something like double that tbh, but if it is only 40Mb/Sec that's not so much of a concern since I'm aiming to be able to pull the data way faster than that. Hi Paul, While I don't have any real world experience dealing with this, W. Curtis Preston mentions it specifically here: http://searchdatabackup.techtarget.com/feature/LTO-tape-technology-continues-to-evolve-with-LTO-5 He wrote the book (literally) on backup. If anyone can answer your questions, he can. http://searchdatabackup.techtarget.com/feature/W-Curtis-Preston-Articles-and-podcasts-on-data-backup-and-recovery http://www.amazon.com/Backup-Recovery-W-Curtis-Preston/dp/0596102461/backupcentral http://www.backupcentral.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=184 Jonathan 2011/8/29 Paul Hutchings <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> I'm looking at replacing our backup server. We're dumping around 12tb to tape each week so I'm keen on LTO5 to get the tape count down. Part of speccing up the backup server will be to get good throughput from the disk array, but once you throw in pulling the data from deduplicated source disk there are quite a few variables. Does anyone have any real-world experience of LTO5 drives and at what point things like shoe-shining starts to be come a potential issue?
