RIM has an outage banner on their home page. Users report sporadic email, at best. SMS works. Our BES says it's had contact with the handhelds and RIM's servers, but Pending Data Packets is steadily increasing and Forwarded Messages is barely moving. (We're on Verizon, homed in North-East US.)
According to the CNN article, RIM's core switch died, and the failover didn't.
