+~1 I never to upgrades to existing installs. I always check the box to uninstall the software when it falls out of scope of management. That way, whenever a new version comes out, you can just remove the old version from the GPO and add the new version. When the computer reboots, it will uninstall the old and install the new.
The original install msi gets cached locally so you don't need to keep the old versions on the network for an uninstall...unless of course the local copy gets damaged somehow. -----Original Message----- From: Ben Scott [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 31, 2011 6:37 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: Upgrading MSI in group policy. You can remove the old version from the GPO more-or-less immediately, as far as I know. The what-upgrades-what information is kept in the MSI. However, many MSI packages require the original install source to be present during installation maintenance, including uninstalls. Since upgrades are often done as "uninstall old, install new", this means you may need to have have the MSI source around for the upgrade to work. Thus I generally try to keep the old MSI source around until I'm reasonably confident that any old versions have upgraded.
