Jim McBee made a presentation at Connections this week on costing out “cloudsourcing”. His %DAYJOB% had recently gone through an exhaustive study attempting to include EVERYTHING involved hosting a HA/FT solution compared and contrasted to having a cloud provider do it for them.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see his presentation, but he and I talked about it and I know he included cost items for cost of power per KWH, cost of AC per cubic ton at a specific temperature, amount of heat generated per server, per disk, per switch, etc.etc. Doing the analysis properly can involve quite a bit of work… Regards, Michael B. I looked at Office 365 and found it to be far more expensive than what I pay now. But, I can see replicating my web sites and databases to a cloud just for the space. >>> Ken Schaefer <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> >>> 11/2/2011 10:57 PM >>> Really? Gartner, right now, is promoting the Cloud like there’s nothing else. 3 years ago it was “outsourcing”. Now, companies are bringing resources back in-house because they realized... “Oops” that didn’t work. You just have to be very careful with “industry” information. It can be just as politically motivated as anything else. From: Andrew S.
