Or you could do what we did and have a backup system that the main system fails over to immediately, no muss no fuss. It wasn't all that expensive.

In our office we have an asterisk box sitting in a VM and never have an issue with it. We are only 10 employees and 4 lines though, but we do a lot of call routing to our phones, all of our droids are SIP registered with our extensions and such, and email to voicemail etc etc.. it all works great. With SIP/IAX you don't need any hardware to run it. James - Besides Randy, I know a Shoretel/Voip dealer that can offer you the best of both worlds from those options if you want.. bandwidth is always a concern. Virtualizing is fine, you have to prep the right hardware for call volume, vmware can do it with vmxnet3 nic (which is made for lots of little packets). I guess for you, it would be how many simultaneous calls will decide if you can VM it or it needs to go on hardware directly if you went asterisk route. For the multiple offices, you could trunk the two together for extension-extension dialing over SIP, and the vendor could probably push your inbound #s to different offices if one of the offices was down ... But only supported on vmware. They claim they are the only vendor capable of that, although I haven't seen proof otherwise. ________________________________ From: Glen Johnson [mailto:[email protected]]<mailto:[mailto:[email protected]]> Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2011 8:11 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: OT - Phone System In A Virtual Machine I'm pretty sure that Cisco now supports their offering in a VMWare environment. From: James Kerr [mailto:[email protected]]<mailto:[mailto:[email protected]]> Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2011 8:57 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: OT - Phone System In A Virtual Machine We are looking at replacing our phone system. This has got me thinking about VIOP systems and being a sys admin who maintains our current phone system (for the most part) has got me thinking about phone system redundancy. I have a desire to run a voice-mail and PBX on virtual machines, if possible. I just don't know if such things exist and was wondering if any of you guys had any info about such systems. We have about 150 phones in two locations two PBXs and one central voice-mail/auto attendant. Venders I've spoke with so far just want to offer newer versions of what we already have. I want something more redundant and easier to bring up again in case of disaster. Thanks for any replies.
