On the issues I've had to resolve, it has taken me over 4 hours on a few occasions to resolve the issue. One of them was a registry key that needed to be deleted before McAfee would update - the fix was simple enough, but it did take some time to find the resolution. Another time it was a file that needed to be deleted for Shavlik to successfully push the correct file to it. Again the fix itself was easy, but finding out what the fix was took significant time. I have others that I have spent more than 8 hours all said and done with no fix short of nuke and pave. This of course is offset by "hey, reboot your machine this month" easy fixes.
Sometimes it's a remote user that needs to be contacted and you need to coordinate a time for them to be connected via VPN and then walk through troubleshooting steps. Sometimes working out the coordination and just getting connected is 30 minutes right there. The remote systems take more troubleshooting/fix effort than onsite systems. Don't disagree, but where did the 4 hours per machine come from? How much FTE hours would you think it would take to maintain 97%+ of them up to date with AV and patching? We have both of those centralized (McAfee ePO and Shavlik NetChk Protect. My SWAG is both are 95% effective leaving 25 systems needing attention and it take about out 4hrs/machine to fix 'em up, so 50hrs/mo just to keep the wheels on. This is above/beyond figuring out what can be ignored due to churn of employee turnover, people on PTO, etc. Does that sound reasonable?
