It has been so long since I touched a VMware version 1 or 2 installation I need a little memory jog. Did either or these run on a Linux or bare metal install? I know they both ran on top of Windows but there was no documentation from the original installation left (if ever there was any). To make matters worse for the company their backups were on a Buffalo storage unit. I have not yet been to the company to take a look at the system so that is all I have at the moment.
