  Sometimes you need more storage than a single disk can provide.
Also, sometimes you need more I/O throughput than a single disk can
provide.

  (This was the original point behind RAID, of course.  SLED (Single
Large Expensive Disk) vs RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks).)
