I seem to remember doing this and then calling the 800 number and them telling me they could do it but if I wanted to do it myself pay a fee and they would unlock the software and it would do the recovery. Their only comment was if the unlocked software was not able to get the data then they would not want me to send it to them. In my case it worked well enough. They did caution me that the drive was dead and to not reuse it. This was >10 years ago now.
