Sometimes you just have to say that even if the system sucks, it is what it is--you have to play the game. You could say the same for certs (someone without certs could be better at a job than someone with them), experience (someone with five years of experience could be better than someone with 15), or any other criteria.
If you're in a position to do it, go for the degree if you feel like it will open doors for you. Many schools offer online programs aimed at people who work. Maybe I'm too much like the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz, but just having that piece of paper makes me feel good.
