  I haven't had that problem/scenario per se.  But there is/was a
widespread problem with capacitors failing prematurely; it was
colloquially labeled "capacitor plague" (you can Google it).
Basically, some inferior capacitors have problems with their
electrolyte decomposing prematurely, leading to physical deformation
of the capacitor body (bulging, leaking, rupture, etc.) and then
performance failure.  I know I had some motherboards slowly go insane
due to cap plague a few years ago.  I suppose it's possible the
scenario described involved a bunch of equipment purchased at the same
time, and thus having capacitors from the same production lot.

  That said, we're talking about a web forum post about an
unreferenced mailing list post, and the diagnosis apparently consists
entirely of speculation, so it's not what I'd call a "reliable
source".  :-)\

  *That said*, shit can happen at any time.  This is why backups,
service contracts, and contingency plans should not be considered
optional.  :)
