That's not 100% correct. It is entirely possible to do all of your downloading 
of Apps and Music directly from the iDevice, and never sync it with a computer 
running iTunes. You can re-download purchased Apps or Music from your iTunes 
account for free as well. Now with iOS 5.0, even upgrades to the OS are 
possible over the air. The only thing that truly _requires_ a computer is a 
backup of the iDevice.

So, no: iTunes is _not_ required. My thoughts are, if it's a personal device, 
sync it at home or over the air if that's allowed.
