This is a machine that's been in service a long time.

The NIC that I was assigning to the SAN network had been set up
previously, and I did change the IP address and subnet mask, and
removed the DG, DNS and WINS settings.

I didn't dive deeply enough - someone had at some point set the NIC
for 100mbit. I changed it to 1gbit, and it's now doing just fine.
