While I don't have a bb I can tell you on some phones there is a setting to prevent charging when plugged into a computer's USB port.

At least, none of the MTP cameras I've plugged into Windows needed anything special. The Blackberry "something fancier" mode also does more than just MTP. Things like tethering and device management also get presented as USB devices.
