Even non-list email, you are seeing two copies? That's something you should report to Gmail's tech support.
The only time you should see two copies of the same message in a conversation are when you are sending to a list that emails you back a copy of your own post - in which case you are seening your 'Sent Mail' message along with the copy your receive back from the list. This is because Gmail's conversation view will show all messages in a conversation thread no matter where they exist - except Spam and Trash. In those cases, Gmail will ntofiy you that there are thread messages hidden from view, and give you the option to display them if you want.
