I never had to buy one of their proprietary cables - I always got one in the 
box with the unit.  That said...considering what I've seen in the field between 
APC and other brands I'd gladly spend the $28 to have the reliability and 
support of APC if I had to.

  Their $45 proprietary RS-232 cables were better?

  Interestingly, the Smart-UPS line still uses the proprietary RS-232 cables, 
but appears to use a standard USB B port.
