In England, you have to be sponsored by someone to get security clearance, normally a business or agency who do work with the higher echelons of government. It leads to lots of "chicken and egg" situations when trying to get work with these agencies. I have my NPPV for working with the police but as for the other security clearances, I'm still waiting for a sponsor.

My story: A “customer” contacted me saying “an agency” needed some Citrix help – NOW! They sent me the worksheet to start gathering info and I also needed three references outside of church, family and schools who knew me at a minimum of seven years! About the only thing not covered in that worksheet was “boxers or briefs”. I had my mom gathering family info, my wife gathering info and a couple of friends from this list getting me their info to use as the references. I then had to go to “the customer site” so they could get fingerprints, talk to me and make a copy of my passport. It was 3 weeks from the initial “contact” to going to the site. Within 15 minutes of them scanning in my passport to make a copy they received an email saying I had my provisional clearance. I was still there talking with them when they started getting the emails. By the time I got home I had instructions on how to go to their secure site and create my account. Then after jumping thru all these hoops and my contacts pulling a lot of strings to get me clearance so fast, the “agency” decided they didn’t need help anyways!!! But once you get a security clearance it is good for 5 years and cannot be pulled except for breaching security protocol. I have been told an individual can request and apply for a security clearance but that it is extremely time consuming and expensive. It helps to have an entity requesting clearance for you to cover all the costs. It helped that I had: Never travelled outside the USA Had no debt Had a perfectly clean credit report No arrests No convictions No alcohol, drug or mental issues (well that last one may be up for debate) A narrow set of skills that “some agency” initially said they needed right then and there To go beyond a regular security clearance requires FBI interviews with literally anyone who is alive who has ever known you. That becomes VERY expensive if you are paying for the clearance yourself. Hope that helped.
