Believe me, I ain't worried one bit about my clearance being suspended,
deactivated, dropped or ignored. I am busy enough without dealing with low
paying government gigs and all the payment hassles. I mean, come on, 16 pages
of 8 pt text to explain how I need to bill and exactly the verbiage that MUST
be included on every invoice is a crock!

Ditto. I'm at 27 years. And if you leave the company holding the clearance,
it gets automatically suspended. It is valid for immediate reactivation for 2
years. Typically the government won't support a company getting employees
cleared until the company has a contract with a DD254 requirement (government
form indicating classified content or access).

So Carl, I'd say your new clearance is already suspended administratively. If
you get another gig that needs a clearance, then the company/agency just logs
into some web site and clicks a box to activate.

I've had a clearance over 25 years. I have never heard of someone getting one
on their own, you have to be sponsored by an entity that has authority to hold
security clearances. You can create your own company and get a cage code
(http://govitwiki.com/wiki/CAGE_Code), but to get a clearance issued you need a
govt agency to sponsor the request, AFAIK.
