First lab I worked in they were still using a PDP-3 when I started. A year later we finally got the state to approve the upgrade to a PDP -11. Data went to tape programs/standards had to be inputted by paper tape. First start up of the 11 we found out someone had folded and stapled the paper tape so we then spent the next two weeks keying the original program into the machine. Then we found out that no one had purchased any paper tape in several years and the "stock pile" was so old it kept tearing as we had the machine send a copy to the paper tape for archival. Less than a year later they finally retired the entire PDP stuff and went with a Unix OS that did the same work but had both floppy and hard drives. Last time I visited the lab they still had the PDP equipment standing in place hooked up but powered off. The sensitivity of the equipment was still far better and more accurate than the new stuff they were just installing, 3 or 4 upgrades had happened since I left.
