Well, I just looked at the manual for the 4108, and it does support
Auto-MDIX, but there is a possibility that it didn't detect and adjust
properly.  I'll add that to the list for the next try at this.

You need a straight cable when connecting a router to a switch, and a
cross cable when connecting 2 switches, unless one or both switches has
Auto-MDIX enabled.

IIRC a HP 4100gl switch doesn't support Auto-MDIX, but a Cisco 3560
does, with the caveat that you need to turn it on on a per-interface
basis, like so:

interface FastEthernet 0/x
 mdix auto


You need to be running 12.2(25)SEE or newer for that to work.
