The mode button is for 2 things:

a) Change the mode of the status LEDs for the switch ports

b) Password recovery. Part of the password recovery procedure on Cisco
IOS fixed-config switches (2900XL and newer) is to power the unit on
while holding down the mode button.

The mode button itself won't change the switch's operation.
