There's an article on Vista Wireless Security in the December 2007 issue of
Windows IT Pro magazine. That may help you a little.

Has an Instantdoc number of 97336.

Carl.

Thanks for the reply.

I've know about the security through obscurity for a while and fortunately
this isn't the only security measure in place.

But, I hadn't thought about the last part broadcasting that SSID in public.

I'm off to re-configure 17 Cisco access points.

Thanks again.

Glen.

Not broadcasting SSID is a faux security measure. This security throuigh
obscurity will only fool the no-effort methods to access a network. Someone
who wants to get in can find the SSID with readily available tools.

Not to mention, enabling clients to "connect even if the network is not
broadcasting" is a security hazard when those clients operate in public
hotspots.

Carl

p.s. you're welcome

Subject: Vista and wireless

Just installed SP1 to a vista laptop hoping it would fix my in-ability to
connect to our Wireless LAN.

No go.

Anyway, I found out why but don't know where to fix the info.

The AP's are set to not broadcast the SSID.

The Wireless policy is configured via group policy.

There is now a setting on the wireless connection properties that says,
Connect even if the network is not broadcasting.

The box is grayed out as it should be since the connection is controlled via
GPO.

Where in the GPO can I change that setting?

Also, thanks to the list for providing the instructions to get SP1 vai WU.

Worked great.
