Block-level updates are a type of incrimental backup.  But instead of
only backing up a file that has changes - you are only backing up a
*part* of a file that has changed.

It makes backups all that much more smaller (after the initital
transfer).  Block-level altered restorations are, for the lack of a
better word, 'compiled' on the other end before being transferred back
to the source.

This is how all the high-end "vauliting" services work too.
