Oliver,
Manufactures have moved away from the old faithfull PATA IDE controller and use 
sh!t like that jmicron chipset I see all the time. Thsi complicates things for 
some older distro's.

If you are bent on buying something, I can't help: I do it all myself.

Do try PE if you need something *now*. It _will_ work, if you got NTFS on that 
disk, there was a windows driver for the controller it was on, and you can pump 
that into PE after its booted if your not groov'in on making an integrated PE 
disc. It will be easy and quick.

Alas, it doesn’t.

Here GParted Live gets half way through then bombs out with read errors and 
every key shows up twice on the screen. Knoppix wont load as it complains it 
cant find the CD (this is after booting from the CD). Tried multiple CD’s and 
DVD images from multiple sources, and have 15 dells here and none of them work.

Ubuntu just beeps loading while loading.
