PostgreSQL is awesome.

However, keep in mind this caveat:

Quite a lot of open-source software thinks the only SQL DB engine in
existence is MySQL.

Simply from a pragmatic POV MySQL is the better tool to learn, even
though MySQL is a tonka toy in comparison to other "free" (open source
and otherwise) SQL database engines.

Other "free" DB engines:
 * MSDE/SQL Server Express
 * DB2 (http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/db2/express/)
 * Oracle (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/xe/index.html)
 * PostgreSQL
 * Firebird (formerly interbase)
