Dammit - I knew while I was typing that I was gonna have to answer that question. And its a good question too. But I dont remember the answer off-hand. :-/
But we (my Perl developer) did create a very similar routine in Perl a few years back for a custom file-transfer back-end for an FTP site at a previous employer. Amusingly it was a couple of years before I became actively interested in Perl myself - so I didnt pay much attention to the details at the time. I'll see if I cant dig something up.
