If you're looking at a solution for just backups, you might well want to look more at Disk De-duplication devices. These are really taking off, and EMC, NetApp etc are scrambling to incorporate the technologies in to their SANs.
Check out Data Domain, Sepaton, Quantum for a few of the bigger players. The allow you to have 18-19 days worth of backups in the space of just over 1-2 backups using intelligent deduplication at block levels. They also come with the intelligent replication software that does the replication over WAN very efficiently. Good site for ballpark pricing is at http://storagemojo.com/ , but it aint cheap technology. Otherwise you can look at Symantec's Veritas NetBackup PureDisk for a software version. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 15 May 2008 07:59 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; NT System Admin Issues; Steve Burkett Subject: RE: DR/Backup Solution Thanks Benjamin -----Original Message----- From: Benjamin Zachary - Lists [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 14 May 2008 21:59 To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: DR/Backup Solution Depending on what you are looking to do ... Application Failover Wansync Doubletake Vmware ESX3 (fibre with dual pathing) Block Failover *most SAN products* DRBD/Heartbeat Datacore s/w SAN If I have my choice I personally think Datacore is faster than most products out there by the way it's designed. If Im budget concerned I look at DRBD. If I just need application replication, Wansync works with decent reporting All of this typically runs on ESX3 anyway but you could use esx3 with fiber san's to do it (I haven't done it myself). -----Original Message----- From: Lumumba, Juma (ILRI-ICRAF) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 5:32 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: DR/Backup Solution Hi All, Out two sister organisations want to invest in a DR/Backup solution with replication across the two sites. The finer details of the model to be adopted is yet to be worked out. We also have remote sites who may need to replicate to HQ, so an IP based solution could be ideal. Because of the size of the investment, we are required to tender for a solution. EMC and Netapp have been aggressive that each of their solutions is ideal. However, we need our own independent info to make a informed decision. Has anybody gone through a similar exercise to share the info used to compare these products, the criteria used etc. They both try try to outdo each on who technology is more superior on snapshots etc. This can be quite confusing. Will appreciate any ideas or materials. Thanks, Lumumba. ~ Upgrade to Next Generation Antispam/Antivirus with Ninja! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbelt-software.com/SunbeltMessagingNinja.cfm> ~ ~ Upgrade to Next Generation Antispam/Antivirus with Ninja! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbelt-software.com/SunbeltMessagingNinja.cfm> ~ ~ Upgrade to Next Generation Antispam/Antivirus with Ninja! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbelt-software.com/SunbeltMessagingNinja.cfm> ~ === STEMCOR CONFIDENTIALITY AND DISCLAIMER NOTICE This e-mail is intended only for the addressees named in it.
