I have been working with Citrix since the very first product [1]. Matter of
fact, in another life I was a software developer. The company I worked for
tested the first Citrix product and we loved it. Image being able to put
16MB of RAM into a server (therefore doubling the cost of the server) and
being able to serve our app to 24 people on Wyse 60 dumb terminals. That
was really sweet for 1990/91.

Printing has been a royal pain in the butt since day 1 and for the most part
has disappeared with PS 4 and PS 4.5 provided you follow a few simple rules.

Never install kernel mode print drivers on a TS or Ctx server

Use the UPD

Use native mode drivers only when necessary (the drivers that come
preinstalled in Server 2003)

Don't replicate print drivers to all Ctx servers

Session printers are very handy and allow you to pick the specific network
printers you want your users to use

Use Citrix policies to control all this printing stuff

Enjoy the video. I learned a lot from it.

1. When the founder left IBM, started the company in TX, hired his
first 5 engineers and then moved back to FL. IIRC, one of those 5 engineers
is still with the company.

I've actually signed up for that second webcast. Just need to find the time
to watch it. I looked in the console, and see a bunch of different printer
drivers installed on the Citrix server. Is this the way it's supposed to
look? I know in the 4.5 class I recently took, the instructor was saying to
NEVER!!! install printer drivers on the Citrix server...

Don't know if anyone here can answer this for me but here goes:

Does anyone know what version of Presentation Server finally "fixed" the
printing issues? I know 4.5 is ok, but is 4.0? Meaning that in 4.5 you are
not supposed to install any print drivers on the Citrix server. Printing is
done completely from the client machine. Is that also true in 4.0?

If you really want to know the basics of the Universal Print Driver, go
here:

If you REALLY want to completely understand the UPD, who better than from
the guy who designed it:

Citrix Presentation Server 4 Universal Printer Driver

http://www.citrix.com/English/NE/events/event.asp?eventID=31745

This is a very deep presentation. About the only thing not covered is how
he wrote the code.
