2.  I think support has lost it.  If you do the initial shot, copy
files over, and do the secondary shot - those files should be detected
unless they are in an area that has been secluded from the snapshot.

I've deployed quite a few tools this way. Unless the older version of
their product that I was using has been drastically changed.
