Hi Oilver,

Look into "software asset management" or SAM, it even has an ISO
standard 19770-1
Look at the white papers at www.managesoft.com and www.expressmetrix.com
That should give you a good starting point. Even if you don't get any of
these tools you at least have an idea about the process and the scope of
the work to be done.

Subject: License maintenance

Hi chaps,

I'm after recommendation of how best to record and assess licensing of
the main MS products (OS, office etc). Tracking and discovery is fine,
we use N-Central here so I can easily find out what's in use. It's the
other side of the coin I'm interested in, compiling a list of what
licenses are available within the company, which are in use, and as a
result which are left available for future use.

Googling just seems to reveal lots of tools to find out what apps are
installed, which I can already do. What I'm after is perhaps a
methodology rather than an application, that when applied will allow me
to find the licenses owned (ie I'm assuming asking accounts for a list
of computers and software purchased) and then recording the available
licenses, cross linking them to what N-Central says is in use, and
determining the spare licenses available.

Does that make sense? If so, how best can I do that without just using
Excel ?

Olly
