Sorry for responding in the middle of the thread, but this one had the questions. Though I like the idea of a noise cancelling headset, I tried out a BOSE once, at the store, awesome but $$$. Though loosing hearing worse. J
Right now I have 2 Dell 2850's (those nice rails sitting in a box), the two tape machines I mentioned before, IBM desktop -Console for AS400, AS400 - E Series, and 1 Dell Precision 410 sitting on one table and one small roller cart (410). I have a stationary 2 post-telco rack with 1 Dell 2450, 1 CISCO 2800, 1 CISCO 2960G-48, patch panel (4U's), 2 APC 1550's and the Fiber Distribution unit . The Fiber unit connects to another floor with another 2 post-telco rack that has a Fiber unit, patch panel (4U's), 1 CISCO 2960G-48 and 1 CISCO 2960-48 all in a 6'x6' closet. I also maintain a 2 2960, 2 2800 at 2 off site locations. I was hire because this department, state wide, is going to be changing its IT infrastructure, moving towards more enterprise focus and moving toward ease of usage and access to/for the public. Also they have never had a Technical person and the last person was doing two jobs plus trying to be the tech, which is why this room was piled high. I will be adding at least a couple of new servers, the WAN is also being upgraded (from frame relay, all three locations together can not get over 1024, to 10mb copper (fiber is right out on the street and the CO is 3.5 blocks away, sniffle), plus I want everything on a battery power (which it is not-I know!). I would like to have the enclosures tight and vented into the building vent system (direct outside will not be an option, more than likely). I used 4 post (72U) APC racks at my last job and liked them a lot, never had anything that I could not fit in. Plus, I need to update several rooms for total audio/video conferencing and some with audio/visual recording to name a few. I have my work cut out for me. It has been fun so far, thought the boss wants what other's have in much less time. We will see; I just want my planning accurate so that I don't have to go backwards to go forward. Which is why I thought I'd ask this group for info. that I'd be adding to my plan.. J If there is one thing I've learned from observing this list, there is wealth of knowledge and experience in this group and I really hate to reinvent the wheel. If you are forced to remain in the server room, it gets noiser as equipment is added and YOUR hearing suffers - don't do it! At the very least, build a wall of boxes (toner cartridges, undeployed VoIP phones, spare laptops, etc.) between you and the servers to preserve your hearing (which cannot be replaced). Out-of-sight, out-of-mind is great until you are deaf! Full rack enclosure solution for which vendors - there are a lot of options depending on servers, UPS, etc. Can you give more detail as to your equipment mix? This was to be the Server room only, but now my work area also. L NOISE! Side effect, I have no one watching over my shoulder. J Now that I have cleaned out the previous occupants, got a 1950's modular desk in place and got the Servers in a place I can actually manage them, I though a Server room redesign was in order. I am looking for recommendations on full rack enclosures.
