Done it before. Doing it right now. Two important things: plan everything
you can think of, inform and instruct users. You'll need to consider printing
(big), workstation management (keeping Zenworking, moving to something else?)
and so on. Quest, as someone pointed out, has great tools. I am using Quest
tools and writing my own scripts to do desktop cleanup/profile moves.

One thing I try to do when I migrate is to minimize impact on users. The
Novell stuff goes away from the desktop, but when possible I try to keep
mappings the same for home and department drives, since at many places staff
know their data are on "the j: drive", for example, and if you don't keep that,
staff will call and ask where the j: drive went.

Novell has free the Identity Manager bundle: you can install this on your
Windows and Netware servers to synchronize user accounts. The good thing about
this is that since it also synchronizes passwords, if you have systems tied to
Novell (Citrix for one like I do) and connect move them to AD until the
migration is complete, users will never notice any change.

You really do need a Netware/eDirectory person on your team. And forget about
the 0% downtime. Even if you do it at night something will pop-up.

Feel free to contact me off-list if you wish.

Stupid question time!

One of our new contracts wants to migrate from Novell to Windows. They
already had AD setup when we won the contract and they want to keep what
they have. They have about 100 Novell servers and they want to migrate them
all to Windows Server platforms - obviously without losing any data and
without downtime. I must admit I know nothing of Novell and mansgement
is asking me how to accomplish the migration - great! I always seem to end
up as the meat in an idiot sandwich! The good thing is that they are not in
a big hurry so we have time to figure this out.

Anybody migrated from Novell to Windows before? Any advice or pointers in
the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff
