That would work IF I could get the resources and if I knew anything at all about running Exchange. At the moment I am working on moving to a Hyper-V and possibly Virtual Server R2 setup. 2 machines one 2008 the other 2003. All of the DC's will be virtual replacing aging hardware. Both of the hosts will be in a workgroup with the DNS being primary to one of the DC's and secondary to the primary off-site DNS for the University. Since I do not control the other side of the trusts I will have to schedule time with the other DA's and the Exchange Admin when the time comes to move the FSMO rolls to one of the new virtual DC's. I still have a lot of research to do as to one of the machines as to if it can do Hyper-V or not. At the moment it is running 2003 Ent with 2 machines taking 2/3's of the available RAM. They are running on Virtual Server R2. I have already migrated 2 other machines off of it to the new 2008 Ent server running Hyper-V.
On a side note Hyper-V is much nicer than VMWare GX or Virtual Server. I have done some testing on crashing the virtual machines and they have done what I wished they would do. One thing I have not tired and really do not want to at the moment is pull the plug on the host and then restart it to see how the virtual machines would respond. I would hope with the hardware setup that I have that scenario would have a slim chance of happening. The machines have dual power supplies split between 2 UPS's each UPS in on a dedicated circuit.
