>From the description for the service.
The DNS Client service (dnscache) caches Domain Name System (DNS) names
and registers the full computer name for this computer. If the service
is stopped, DNS names will continue to be resolved. However, the results
of DNS name queries will not be cached and the computer's name will not
be registered. If the service is disabled, any services that explicitly
depend on it will fail to start.

Sounds like it would make dns lookups take a bit longer since they are
no longer cached.
If you are running active directory and the computers register their
host name with DNS, that will no longer be maintained.
After the DNS expiry time, the host should not be reachable via its'
name, only IP address.
May or may not be a problem, depending on your environment.

Subject: Vista DNS Client Service

Does anyone know what the Vista DNS Client Service does? I've had a
number of vista computer give an error

The DNS Client service has stopped working

In my experience this error only occurs if the computer is running Vista
SP1 and is a member of a domain. I was talking to someone the other day
who was experiencing the same problem. He said they just turn the DNS
client service off. I did it and my problem went away and no other
problems have surfaced yet. I was a bit surprised. Being a DNS client
seems like it's pretty important! Obviously this must not be required
to resolve host names or my computer wouldn't be working very well. So,
what's the DNS Client service do?

Thanks for your help.

Curt
