Thanks everyone. I'll probably do it with vbscript for now. 2008 is planned but not until I and my staff get more familiar on it. And no plans to move to Vista. I do like the print management console. One more thing: is there some sort of web page users can go to in order to see/install printers? (In my eDirectory environment iPrint has a web page so users can see printers and install if needed, so to continue this would be nice).

I do it with a script, in the login script. I check group memberships, and assign printers accordingly (I try to have each department be it's own group).
