I hate to suggest this as it's so rudimentary, but isolate the server (or have a test server) and bring up the connection status and then benchmark the # of packets sent/received during a client/server session ... I like the MRTG option, you could monitor the router/switch port, and could also enable SNMP on the server and monitor there too... and several packet capture/sniffer type tools could also help to isolate your info, I think OmniPeek Personal would do that amongst others
