I'll hazard a guess that its possible to take into consideration the
use of various tool bars and add-ons.  But I agree that FF and IE at
their barest are quite similar in speed.

I prefer FF mostly because of the Add-ons - particularly GreaseMonkey
scripts - that allow me to tailor my browsing experience.  And as I've
said before, I've had tab-related issues in IE7, which is a
deal-breaker for me.
