You could take a look at OCS Inventory NG. It does hardware and software
inventory. It is an open source project that I used a previous version
of and was it very good. I haven't used this version except in a small
test but it also seemed very good. The server requires Windows or
various flavors of Linux, but it has agents for Windows, Mac and Linux.

It does have some software push capability - not sure if it includes
Macs for that or not.

The charitable pricing for Microsoft software isn't bad...have you
thought of System Center?

Hey list.

So, we're looking for something that can help us with hardware/software
audit. We started looking at the KACE solution, but were completely
blown away by the price. (We're a school with an already cut budget...
and they were asking for nearly my annual salary!)

We've tried Spiceworks, which is a great product, but it is unable to
handle our 1000 PC/MAC node network. It could not correctly identify all
our hardware systems reliably. Perhaps I should give it another try,
since the last attempt I made was with Spiceworks 2.0?

So I'm curious on what others on this list have used.

Needs: I need to have a agent or agentless method of identifying
computers. Computer names, Computer models and serial numbers, and basic
Hardware info (CPU speed, memory, MAC addresses, etc). All of this I
need to be able to search for.

Wants: I would like something that can also hit our Macintosh machines.
Price is a consern, but we're willing to buy a solution if the price
isn't too high.

Icing: Software deployment/Patch management.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
