I've played with Joomla since it's birth from Mamba and have yet to run into any major issues. I'm sure arguments can be made as to the best features of both products so I won't go that route. I can only speak to my particular needs and for the longest time I haven't felt that Drupal fits the mold for a "portal". To me it feels more like a blogging tool and when compared with Wordpress it still comes up short. I say play around with them all and check the communities to see how others are responding.
